gi is the uniform you see on jodo, aikido and players. no gi is when you are not wearing them. in jui jitsu competitions you have gi and no gi tournaments. mma is only no gi
The traditional gi or uniform is not used in MMA.
Gi is used in arts such as Judo, tae kwon do, karate, and Jiujitsu.
MMA promotions such as the now defunct PrideFC had fighters use Gi, nowadays that is not allowed.
You are right about it being with or without the uniform on. The differences is somewhat in the style of fighting.
Traditional BJJ is done with a Gi on. So is Judo. In a lot of BJJ moves, you incorporate the gi and the belt with submissions. You can choke people out with the sleeve, use the belt for sweeps, etc.
Same with judo. You can do a lot of throws buy grabbing the collar and such with the Gi.
It also helps with grappling because even when your sweating, it keeps the friction between the two people.
I assume they took the Gi out of MMA events because it gave an advantage to some people and they wanted to minimize what was allowed inside the rings.
If you want to see a fighter adapt Gi moves into no gi moves, check out Karo Paryisan fights. He is a very good judo fighter currently in the UFC and has change a lot of throws for non gi fights.
There are some narrow-minded people who believe that bjj is the ultimate art because they train without a gi(uniform). They assume incorrectly that if a judo person is fighting person without a gi they will not be able to fight. That is the farthest thing from the truth. That is like telling a boxer that if he doesn’t have on gloves he can’t punch.
I don’t need a uniform to throw(take down) a person. I don’t need a gi to break an arm, wrist. or neck.
To the asker, yes wearing the uniform affects your fighting style. Though the fundamentals are the same, grappling with and without a gi are completely different animals.
Jwbulldog, BJJ uses a gi lol. And yes, you definitely could perform throws and jointlocks without a gi — just not as well as somebody who trains exclusively in that environment. And vice versa for that matter. A submission grappler would still be able to handle himself if he got into a tussle during the winter, but if he got into a tussle with a judoka while wearing jackets, he’d likely be outclassed.
Fundamentally similar, yet both are very different.
Gis do a couple of things. First they offer a fold of material to grab onto when going for a hold, throw, or choke. In fact some techniques require a gi like a front lapel choke. There are other techniques that require no gi at all and if your opponent is only wearing a T-shirt or nothing you better know how to apply some things without relying on a gi. Secondly as some of my fellow martial artists have mentioned they help soak up and absorb sweat and keep the slippage down as fighters or wrestlers work for an advantage or to apply a hold or choke. Thirdly they slow down the action just a little so wrestling or fighting with gis on gives each person just a fraction more time to block or counter a hold or choke as your opponent tries to apply it.
ok ill break it down easier than the other guys did in case u dont know the abrivations. a gi is the robe and belt and pants worn in most syles of martial arts. no gi is as easy as wearing anything other than a gi. in mixed martial arts some fighters who main fighting style is jujitsu wear the gi durring a mixed martial arts fight to gain traction on the opponent being that theyre goin 2 b sweaty and stuff. 90% their art consists of is holding ur opponent so the gi helps sometimes.
Everyone else answered what it is but didnt really identify the benefits.
Just to clarify its a martial arts robe that is kinda thick and extremely tough to tear. Most are white though they make them in all colors. Comes with a belt made of the same material though a little thicker.
Benefits include
1)It hides your body from view. Most people are not bulked way up, and you can still look big covered in a gi. Who would have been scared of Royce Gracie if they could have seen him without his gi in UFC 1-10. He has a 16 year olds body yet with a gi he still looks pretty bad.
2)Chokes and submissions. There are hundreds of moves that incorporate the gi. From kneck chokes to throws to grappling. When someone trains years at these moves they rely on them, and taking a gi away is taking a hundred moves away form them. There are thousands of moves though so dont think that a person still cant open a can of whoop ass without a gi on. Like the guy above said a Judo guy can still easily throw a person with no gi, just have to use a different move.
3) Sweat. A gi drys the body by wiping the sweat off. When a person gets all sweaty is nearly impossible to get some major submissions. So a gi helps in submissions that ways too.
Well, its like this. If you have a gi on, then its gi. If you don’t then its no-gi. Psshhh.. easy
They teach you to fight both ways (with and without the gi). What are the odds of you getting into a fight when you’re wearing your gi?
Gis are for people who wanna play dress up and look cool. No gi is for realistic situations.
