The winning formula right now seems to be a combination of jujitsu, muay thai, wrestling, and boxing.

Ultimate Fighting Championship, based on the concept of pitting different fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules in place, in an attempt to determine which system would be more effective in a real, unregulated combat situation.[1] In the late 1990s and early 2000s, mixed martial arts events implemented additional rules for the safety of the athletes and to promote acceptance of the sport, while maintaining as much of the original no-holds-barred concept as possible. Since these changes, the sport has grown rapidly, to the point of setting pay-per-view records.

Any style will do, as long you learn to fight in all ranges. They are striking, Clinch, Take down Ground fighting.

In general, a good mix are Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo, Sambo BJJ.

Some examples; Chute Boxe fighters: Wanda, Ninja, Shogun are Muay Thai and BJJ trained. Fedor and his bro are Sambo and Russian Boxing.

For a successful MMA fighter, they are not so much into style. They train to improve the weak areas thus cross training is inevitable. Especially, if they are going to face up to new opponents. For example, they will spar/train with a pro BJJ guy to get ready for the next opponent strong in BJJ.

Hope this help.

The standard answer is gonna be Ju-jitsu for submission, Muay thai for striking and kicking, and wrestling for strength and agility, But I would go one further and add judo because of the multiple throws and simple foot sweeps you can use during the clinch. Each discipline has their strengths that why they are the most sought out and used because they effective and adaptable to one another.
