Ty M asked:

It actually was going to be an olympic sport under the name
Pankration at the 2004 Athens Olympics but they decided not to.

But I want it to change and let it be an olympic sport.

Makeing it an olypic sport would be a little difficult. I would like to see it because I make the claim that if you think your the best climb into the cage.

I’d like to see it happen, but I don’t think it will. The gloves used in most MMA matches make it too easy to cut someone, a situation that will be compounded of knees and elbows to the head are allowed. They also don’t protect the hands as well as boxing gloves; you tend to see at least one broken hand injury on an MMA card. It would be very hard to have a world-tournament format without the athletes getting too beaten up to compete.

First off Pankration is not the same as MMA. It is a specific style of martial art founded in Greece but modern day Pankration is not the same as the original one at all. Secondly MMA has not place in the Olympic games at all.

pankration WAS an olympic event in greece back in the early days (like 650 BCish)… look into it… apparently there were different divisions and rules for the separate divisions as in any combat sport, but it was similar as today in that it was a blend of grappling and striking tactics.

Dude, I would LOVE to see this happen. It’s one of the GREATEST sports out there!

In order to change it into something that could run in an Olympic. tournament fashion you would have to make it something that could be done every day or two for a week. Just look at the changes in boxing to see how different it would be.

Would you still want it if padded head gear was required, large thumbless gloves, no elbows or knee strikes, no kicks below the waist, and no striking once your opponent is on the ground?

I disagree. There is no way to do a tournament of Olympic caliber, all the while keeping the fighters health in mind. You’d have to put so many rules and restrictions on it that it would not be any fun to watch.

I definitely like the idea of it being an Olympic sport, but I don’t think its going to happen. The only way to make it work give then time constraints imposed by the short duration of the Olympics would be a tournament style showdown. The inherent risk in any tournament where a fighter has to fight multiple opponents in a short time frame is that an injury - even a small one like a cut above the eye - would automatically drop a fighter from being able to continue. And given how often small cuts happen in MMA, it seems like the best fighters wouldn’t even make the finals because of medical disqualifications. Do you really want to see an alternate or replacement fighter winning Olympic gold that is undeserved?

Feel free to disagree with me, but I just don’t see how it could work out.

It would be cool to have it.

But how would it work because a lot of the other sports have mutiple matches. MMA people have them spaced out because it will be hard on their bodies. Also people getting hurt would not be good.

So I think it would be cool, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Lets wait till Boxing gets fixed

Nope, not me, but i’d rather not watch it at all.

If they make it and Olympic sport you can wave goodbye to any actual striking or hurting of any kind.

MMA in no way qualifies as an Olympic sport.

Qualifications:
MMA has no recognized world championship.
MMA has no amateur presence in 99% of countries.
MMA is not a legitimate sport and is as much about luck as it is about skill.
MMA is not standardized worldwide.

MMA has no worldwide governing body.

In short, you have a better chance at getting tic-tac-toe into the olympics as MMA

*Edit - as you can see, DaMatrix is simply being obtuse in his answer by stating the exact opposite as myself with no proof. How could MMA be considered standardized when every single league varies its rules? Some have elbows, some dont. Some allows kicks to the head of a downed opponent, some don’t. Do your research before opening your mouth.

I hate these people who give mma a bad name. It’s a sport just like Taekwondo was in the olympics and no one spoke bad about it. I’m for it and for all you people who say no quit hearing about fights in a bad environments like rings set up in bars and start respecting to sport. You can have boxing… nobody said anything. Wrestling… nobody said anything… Than how come you cant put two together and make it a sport?

Absolutely. It would have to be like the original UFC whereas the fighters would be subject to multiple fights during that couple of weeks. True champions would emerge. The downside, some of the competitors would be subject to career ending injuries. MMA is big business and it would have to be seriously considered for 2012. Its kinda more like an X-game sport if you really get down to brass taxes.
